Though they’ve mostly gone the way of the hood ornament, there used to be a time when pretty much every city or town worth its salt had a drive-in movie theater. That’s right, children: mom and dad, grandpa and grandma used to watch movies from the comfort of their own car on summer nights instead of cooped up inside, sitting in a sticky movie theater seat that has had who knows what spilled on it. There’s been a generation or two now who has never known the joys of going to the drive in theater, but that doesn’t mean they’re entirely out of luck. All across America, a few keepers of the flame are making sure the drive-in experience lives on, with many still showing first-run flicks to carloads of moviegoers. Feel free to bring your own food and beverages, but remember that concession sales are pretty much the only thing keeping these theaters alive. Admission is $6 for ages 12 and up, while kids under 12 are free with parents. Church Street, Aurora, MO Aurora, Missouri First opened in 1951, the Sunset Drive-In is a local institution which has risen from calamity several times, including a 1979 fire that destroyed their wooden screen. Today, the Sunset can accommodate up to 300 cars, and uses state-of-the-art digital FM broadcasting for sound. Admission is $8, and they’re a cash only establishment, so hit the ATM before you go. Click the map icon, and you’ll see a map of the United States, with your current location as a blue dot and each Badge of Honor trail marked with a yellow pin. Below the map, the trails nearest to your current location are listed first. Each trail listing features a difficulty ranking, from easy two to extremely difficult nine. Click on each listing and then tap the rectangular tab that appears over the map location you’ve selected, and you’ll be presented with a screen showing the trail’s general terrain, how many Jeepers have checked in there, directions to the location, weather, general information and photos taken by Jeep owners who have visited. In order to claim your digital Badge of Honor for the location, just drive there and click the app’s “Check In” button while at the location. In order to request a physical hard badge that you can put on your Jeep for bragging rights, you’ll have to go to your Badge of Honor app profile page, see which Badges of Honor you’re eligible for, then type in the VIN number of your Jeep to prove you’re actually a Jeep owner. Hit send, and your unique badge will be on its way to you in no time, ready to apply to your fender or tailgate with the supplied automotive double stick tape. Click here to shop our selection of 2018 Jeep Wrangler models online Announced by Jeep on August 28, the 2018 Wrangler Moab is based on the Jeep Wrangler Sahara model, and features the Sahara’s body-color hardtop as standard equipment.What sets the Wrangler Moab apart, however, are a number of factory mods lifted from the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon edition, which help make the Moab into a tough-as-nails off roading machine that’s as happy on the trail or blasting through mud as it is on city streets. The Wrangler Moab includes the 2018 Rubicon’s signature hood with functional air intakes, as well as the Rubicon’s steel bumpers with removable end caps. Jeep Rubicon also lends the Moab its high-strength steel rock rails to protect the lower body (Sahara style side steps are also available). With more than 25 years as a mechanic in his rearview mirror, McLarty Daniel CDJRF Service Manager Anthony Reed has seen it all, fixed it all, and has probably forgotten more about cars than most people will ever know. Not only does he understand how to diagnose and fix even the most complicated problems, he knows the simple tricks you can take to keep your car, truck or SUV alive longer, even if you don't have a quarter-decade of experience, thousands of dollars worth of tools and a fully staffed service center at your disposal. We recently stopped in with Mr. Reed and asked him for some basic tips folks can use to help the service techs at McLarty Daniel CDJRF keep their cars, trucks and SUVs healthy for more miles. After thinking about it for a bit, Reed came up with five service tips to help get the most out of your car, no matter how many miles are on the odometer. If your vehicle is clunking, rattling, clattering or otherwise “making a noise,” come see us at McLarty Daniel Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat in Springdale. If your ride has a hitch in her git-along, Anthony and his team will set it straight at a price you can afford. Read on for some tips to make sure your trips to the service center are as few and far between as possible. Click here to schedule an appointment with our Service Department Change your oil regularly: Even Reed admits this one sounds like a no brainer, but keeping your oil changed at a regular interval is crucial to helping your vehicle be all it can be for as long as it can. “You think this is common knowledge,” Reed said, “but I've got a car sitting out here that belongs to a guy who didn't have this common knowledge: change your oil frequently. I know the manufacturers these days say go up to 10,000 miles. I'm just now getting in my mind where I can stomach 5,000 miles between oil changes on my cars. I grew up with a 3,000 mile interval. Now we're using synthetic blend oils, we have better oil technology than we have. But frequency and consistency of oil changes is one of the best thing you can do for your car.” Keep your tires inflated to factory-specified pressure, and have them rotated: Rotating your tires and religiously checking your tire pressure is such a “Dad” thing to do that it's almost become a punchline, but Reed said that with today's modern cars, all systems need to be within factory tolerances for everything to work as designed. That includes your tires. “People who don't keep their air pressure in the right poundage get less life out of their tires, and they're going to lose some fuel economy from it. The cars are all designed these days with such close tolerances. Tires are supposed to be at 32 pounds and it's set there for a reason: to get the best performance out of your car. Rotating your tires keeps your tires wearing in a nice, even pattern. The tires on the back are being drug around. They're going the same way all the time, but the tires on the front are turning, they're going around curves, they're catching wear on the outer edges. To keep an even wear, you have to rotate, or otherwise you'll wear out your front tires first. If you rotate your tires properly and do it right, can add 5,000 to 10,000 miles to the life of your tires.” Unless you're driving a high performance car, skip the high octane gas: When it comes time to fill up, drivers of gasoline-powered cars are faced with three buttons, three different octanes, and a dilemma: does my car really need higher octane gasoline to work its best? Reed says no, and that choosing a higher octane fuel than the basic unleaded could actually be doing more harm than good. “Regular unleaded gas is all you need,” he said. “None of the cars today are designed to need anything other than the lowest octane rating, which is 87. Hardly any of them, except for like the Hellcat need it. The Hellcat says you have to run Super Premium in it. That engine is designed to need that extra octane and extra heat. It does absolutely no good to put high octane fuel in your pickup truck with a Hemi. It can actually cause more problems in the long run because it allows for carbon buildup because the engine can't burn off all the fuel. That creates carbon deposits and will eventually cost you fuel economy. Use what the manufacturer says.” If your car is still under warranty, get it repaired and serviced at the dealership: This one isn't just Reed's way of slyly drumming up business. Not only does McLarty Daniel CDJRF know your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram or Fiat better than anyone, taking it to another shop where they might use inferior parts, filters or fluids can indeed void your warranty. As for the supposed higher cost of taking a car to the dealership, Reed said doing so can actually save you thousands in the long run. “My guys are factory trained,” Reed said. “They know everything about your model car. They know the quirks, they know anything that might look odd or shouldn't be there, and they recognize it. If you go somewhere else, an aftermarket shop, those guys are working on several different models. They don't always know your car, they don't always know your maintenance needs. They look at cars at one-size-fits all. We go by the manufacturers recommendations. We're knowledgeable about your car. It is not true that the dealership is always more expensive. We price to be competitive, especially on all our maintenance stuff. We've got people looking at the market for that. We don't have to be the cheapest, but we do want to be the best. On a lot of things, we are less, though. Our oil changes are less than most places for what we're offering. We're a solid, full-synthetic dealership. We only carry synthetic blends or full synthetic oils. We stock no conventional oils, except for the Cummins diesels. We're what they call a Gold Dealer because of that. It's all we offer. I've see several instances where someone has gone somewhere else and they've replaced all these parts and spent $1,300 or $1,400 dollars, and they come here. They'll tell me what it's doing, and i'll already kinda know what it is before they get it to me, because I've seen it before or I'm knowledgeable about it. I'll get it and fix it for $300, and the problem goes away. That's because my guys know what's going on with these cars.” Inspect your air filter regularly, and change it more often than you might think you need to: Try to imagine wearing the same dust filtering mask over your nose and mouth for months and months at a time, and you'll quickly understand why keeping the air filter in your vehicle changed is so crucial to engine performance. Just like you, to work at peak performance, your car needs to be able to take a clean, deep breath. Reed said keeping the filters replaced is one of the best things you can do for your vehicle's long term upkeep. “The whole operation of the engine is air coming in to get mixed with fuel in the chamber and combust,” Reed said. “If you're not getting the right amount of air in, you start losing fuel economy, performance and all kinds of things. Constant inspection — and we do it during our inspections — is important. An air filter can get dirty even in between even oil changes depending on the conditions you're driving in. Usually, you're going to need to inspect the air filter every other oil change. That's a safe bet. I don't know if that's average, but you should definitely inspect it that often. We inspect every filter every time. I'm not saying replace it every other oil change, but you should inspect it every other oil change. It can affect your performance, lower your fuel economy, and if you allow it to get dirty enough and go un-replaced for a long enough period, you can start causing engine damage. Dirt and debris will start getting by that filter and get into your engine. The whole purpose of having a filter there is to keep that out. I see a lot of diesels with that problem. It's a condition we call 'dusting.' You'll see that dust going right down the intake, right into the engine. That's not good. It's like fine sand. It's like sandpaper inside your cylinders.” As a car owner, you're constantly fighting a battle between time, friction, heat, and the delicate moving parts that help keep your vehicle running at tip-top condition. Fiat Chrysler America recently announced that Fiat will be teaming up with the racing-focused content producers Hoonigan Media to crown America's Next Great Driver, with the winner appearing as a co-host in Hoonigan Youtube videos and being awarded a race-ready Fiat 124 Spider Abarth (like the one seen above) that has been customized on-air by the Hoonigan team. The Hoonigan Youtube channel, which currently has over 1.8 million subscribers, features the Hoonigan team wrenching on and flogging purpose-built race and street performance cars that span the entire spectrum of the automotive hobby, from dune buggies to racing go-karts to 1,200 horsepower diesel drag trucks. Video submissions for this year's contest, in which potential contestants of both genders spend a maximum of 60 seconds explaining why they should be selected as the Next Great Driver, will be uploaded to Youtube with the hashtag #hooniganswanted in the video title. Potential contestants must also fill out a form at the website hooniganswanted.com, which includes full details on the contest and rules. From the entries submitted, ten contestants will be chosen. When the competition starts, the contestants will be divided into teams by celebrity drivers, including legendary off-road, drifting and rally-car driver Rhys Millen. Over the course of five episodes that will be shown on the Hoonigan and Fiat social and digital media channels, the contestants will participate in a number of driving challenges behind the wheel of several different Fiat performance models, including the Fiat 500 Abarth, the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth, and a factory-built Fiat 134 Abarth rally car. Contestants will be scored on driving skill, teamwork, pit duty, stunt driving, time-attack trials and other metrics. The Hoonigan-modified Fiat 124 Spider Abarth racecar that will serve as the grand prize for this year's challenge is currently being modified with cameras rolling at the Hoonigan shop. Though the legendary Dodge performance division went through some lean years in the 1980s and ‘90s, they have definitely got their Mopar Mojo back since the mid-2000s, fielding incredible cars like the Challenger and Charger SRT and Hellcat models, and the 2018 Challenger Demon, which — with 840 hp on tap plus advanced launch control — could do cool tricks like doing wheel standing dragstrip launches from the factory. Shop Our Selection of New Vehicles The Old Mill North Little Rock, Arkansas Seen in: “Gone With the Wind” (1939) Though it made one of the most memorable Arkansas location appearances ever in a major Hollywood film, a brief glimpse during the opening credits of the 1939 Civil War classic “Gone With the Wind,” North Little Rock’s Old Mill turns out to not be an actual mill at all. Though it looks the part, with multiple floors, a mill wheel that once turned, and internal details like railings pulleys and a mill stone, the Old Mill is actually only a replica of a classic American grist mill. At the time of the filming, it was only a few years old having been created by Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez as the centerpiece of a park which was itself the centerpiece of a neighborhood going up in the area. Though the mill looks like it is made of wood, right down to the grain in its doors, is actually all concrete, as are the stunningly intricate, fairytale-like “log” benches, bridges, benches, troughs and arches around it. A favorite backdrop for portraits and wedding photos, today, the Old Mill is the last structure seen in “Gone With the Wind” that’s still standing. I-30 Speedway Alexander, Arkansas Seen in: “White Lightning” (1973) Directed by John Sargent, the movie “White Lightning” stars up-and-coming Hollywood leading man Burt Reynolds (still years from superstardom in flicks like “Smokey and the Bandit”) as Arkansas moonshine runner and stock car racer Gator McKlusky. Gator is an Arkansas prison inmate who cuts a deal with the feds to gain his release. He then infiltrates the local illegal moonshining operation in order to seek revenge against the corrupt local Sheriff (Ned Beatty, who co-starred with Reynolds in 1972’s “Deliverance”) after the Sheriff and his minions kill McKlusky’s brother. An underrated classic of the 1970s fast cars genre, Burt Reynolds’ “White Lighting” is set in the fictional Bogan County, Arkansas. However, the film does include several real locations in Arkansas, including a car chase through the Benton town square, McKlusky emerging from a real-life Arkansas Department of Correction prison near Grady, and the I-30 Speedway, a still-operational stock car dirt racing track (then known as The Benton Speedbowl.) Five Iconic Dodge Vehicles in Cinema Downtown Camden Camden, Arkansas Seen in: “Boxcar Bertha” (1972) In 1972, following up on  the cult success of “Bloody Mama,” which he’d filmed in Arkansas, schlock director and producer returned to Arkansas to shoot another Depression-Era film, “Boxcar Bertha.” Loosely based on real-life train robbers Boxcar Bertha Thompson and “Big” Bill Shelly, who become wanted fugitives after a gambler was murdered, the film stars big names like David Carradine and Barbara Hershey, and was largely shot in the southwest Arkansas town of Camden. While it’s not a great film, the most interesting thing about “Boxcar Bertha” is who was behind the camera: a young Martin Scorsese, the brilliant, Oscar-winning director who would go on to direct classics like “Goodfellas,” “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Casino,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Gangs of New York” and loads of other great American films. The Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer Museum and Study Center Piggott, Arkansas Seen in: “A Face in the Crowd” (1957) The great director Elia Kazan came to the northeast Arkansas town of Piggott in 1957 to shoot portions of his classic “A Face in the Crowd.” Starring a young Andy Griffith, Lee Remick and Patricia Neal, the film is a cautionary tale about the meteoric rise and sudden fall of Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes (Griffith), a shiftless drifter who attains previously undreamed of levels of money, power and political influence through devious manipulation of both radio and the fledgling television medium before his hubris lays him low. The mansion of local leading lights Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer makes a cameo in the film as Rhodes’ palatial estate, complete with the swimming pool the production company had put in for the scene. Today, the house is the Matilda and Karl Pfeiffer Museum and Study Center, and open to the public. Other scenes for the film were shot at the Clay County Courthouse and a local football field. Spooky Mysteries That Happened in Arkansas Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store Dumas, Arkansas Seen in: “Mud” (2013) Screenwriter, director and Little Rock native Jeff Nichols has been slowly making a name for himself as one of the best young directors working in Hollywood today, and the film that really helped him arrive was 2013’s “Mud,” starring megastar Matthew McConaughey as a fugitive who seeks the help of two boys in Southeast Arkansas. Nichols fought hard with the studio to make sure the movie was filmed in Arkansas, and when he got his wish, he did so in a lot of real southeast Arkansas towns, including Dumas and Stuttgart. The Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Highway 65 in Dumas was a crucial interior and exterior backdrop for several scenes, as was the Executive Inn Motel just down the street. Garry’s Sling Blade Drive-In Benton, Arkansas Seen in: “Sling Blade” (1996) Made on a shoestring budget by the then largely-unknown writer, actor, director and Malvern-native Billy Bob Thornton, the simple, powerful story of friendship and sacrifice seen in 1996’s “Sling Blade” went on to win the hearts of millions of moviegoers, a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Thornton, and an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in a year when romantic juggernaut “Titanic” mostly ruled the other categories. “Sling Blade” was almost wholly shot in the Saline County town of Benton, and you can still have some of them French-fried pertaters at the same restaurant where the film’s childlike protagonist Karl Childers liked to get his in the film: Garry’s Drive-In on Edison Ave., now called Garry’s Sling Blade. It’s a great bit of Arkansas film history, and a classic little diner with terrific food, too. AR Hwy. 74 West Fork, AR Established during the Great Depression by FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps, Devil’s Den State Park still includes many CCC-built structures, including the stone dam that impounded Lee Creek to create the lovely Lake Devil. In addition to hiking, backpacking and mountain bike trails along with canoe and paddle boat rentals, the park features seventeen romantic and fully equipped cabins, all with wood-burning fireplaces, if you want to go “glamping.” If you have a slightly more rustic experience in mind, Devil’s Den also features 143 campsites for tents, including 44 class AAA sites with water, electrical and sewer, 24 class D campsites, and eight that are “hike in” only, meaning you’ve got to work to get to them. There are showers, garbage pickup, and plentiful opportunities for adventure or peaceful reflection. Feel free to bring your horse, too. There’s 20 miles of riding trails at Devil’s Den. Camping rates range from $13 to $34 per night, depending on amenities. Photo Credit: ArkansasStateParks.com Withrow Springs State Park 33424 Spur 23, Huntsville, AR The Arkansas State Park system is full of undiscovered, off-the-beaten-path gems with all the beauty of the parks that get all the headlines, but a fraction of the visitors. One of those is Withrow Springs State Park near Huntsville. Secluded deep in a valley hemmed by limestone bluffs along War Eagle Creek, the petite park is a favorite spot for camping, with opportunities for fishing for a number of sport fish species, canoe rentals, and hiking on War Eagle Trail, Dogwood Natural Trail, or Forest Trail. In addition to a swimming pool, tennis courts, pavilions and baseball and softball fields, Withrow Springs State Park includes 30 Class AAA campsites with power, water and sewer hookups, allowing the sites to accept either tent or RV campers. Nightly camping fees are $34. The park is located five miles north of Huntsville near Arkansas Highway 23. Cool Caves to Explore in Northwest Arkansas Photo Credit: ArkansasStateParks.com Lake Fort Smith State Park 18160 Shepherd Spring Road, Mountainburg Another under-appreciated gem of the Arkansas State Parks system, Lake Fort Smith State Park near Mountainburg is a beautiful site set in the Boston Mountains, on one edge of the 1,400-acre Lake Fort Smith. No matter what you’re hoping to get up to (other than swimming; Lake Ft. Smith is a drinking water reservoir, so swimming, tubing, jet skiing, skiing and other similar activities aren’t allowed), there’s something for you at Lake Fort Smith State Park, including a huge swimming pool, hiking, backpacking along the Ozark Highland National Recreation Trail, ten picturesque cabins, an 8,000 square foot visitor’s center with exhibits on local history and geology, a theater, and year-round interpretive programs. We’re here to talk about camping, though, and Lake Fort Smith features plenty of that: 30 capsites — 20 AAA with water, sewer and electrical hookups, and 10 Class B with only water and electrical — with nearby showers, dump stations, and restroom facilities.
