Main Street, Cave Springs When a haunted house starts the online description of their facility with “if you soil yourself, we will celebrate,” it’s a good bet that you’d better come ready to be seriously scared. Expanded and redesigned for 2019, the Asylum Haunted House in Cave Springs has won several awards for their bone-chilling presentation, design and props since they opened in the 2007 Haloween season, including being voted the number two haunt in the state (was that on purpose, given the “soil yourself” comment?) by Scare Factor Magazine. Because of extreme scares, the haunt is not recommended for children. Admission is $15 per person, and they’re open every weekend until Halloween. With movie-grade props, actors, costumes and scares, Carpenter’s Mortuary Spook House also features a film-grade plot: the story of a Great Depression-era huckster who began taking in orphans from the state to make ends meet before committing unspeakable crimes on Halloween night! Standard pulp fare, but it’s an immersive experience that works, especially given the already spooky locale of the former mortuary and “funeral chapel.” Because of extreme scares, it’s recommended only for those 13 and up. For more information, creep on over to their website at: mortuarystudios.com NIGHTMARES HAUNTED HOUSE AND PHANTOM 13 BUS RIDE 13080 US-71, Bentonville Now in its 30th year, Nightmares Haunted House and Phantom 13 Bus Ride started out in 1987 as a family hayride put on by hardcore Halloween fan Chris Michaels and his his wife Linda. Several iterations, a lot of learning about makeup and props, a dedicated haunt location building and a partnership with the Bentonville Breakfast Lions Club later, and Nightmares Haunted House is one of the top-rated Halloween haunts in the region, with a staff of over 300 volunteers and all profits being doled out to worthy organizations by the Lions Club throughout the year. Since 2004, Nightmares has been a unique, two-fold experience that incorporates both the large, excellent haunt full of costumed actors and big scares, but also the Phantom 13 Bus Ride, a literal ride on a nightmare-themed bus that ferrys you to and from the haunt. Put it all together and you’ve got a truly terrifying experience that’s unique in the world of haunted attractions. Though they’ve mostly gone the way of the hood ornament, there used to be a time when pretty much every city or town worth its salt had a drive-in movie theater. That’s right, children: mom and dad, grandpa and grandma used to watch movies from the comfort of their own car on summer nights instead of cooped up inside, sitting in a sticky movie theater seat that has had who knows what spilled on it. STONE DRIVE-IN 801 Theater Lane Mountain View, Arkansas The last drive-in standing in North Central Arkansas, the Stone Drive-In in Mountain View opened as a one-screen theater way back in 1965, and so it remains, with a capacity of about 300 automobiles and large and enthusiastic weekend crowds during their season, which runs from March to October. For more information, check out their website at: www.stonedrivein.net KENDA DRIVE-IN 107 Westwood Drive Marshall, Arkansas Another old-line small-town drive-in, the Kenda opened in 1966 and features weekend double features on a 72-foot screen, with sound delivered by old-school window speakers. Feel free to bring your own food and beverages, but remember that concession sales are pretty much the only thing keeping these theaters alive. Admission is $6 for ages 12 and up, while kids under 12 are free with parents. Church Street, Aurora, MO Aurora, Missouri First opened in 1951, the Sunset Drive-In is a local institution which has risen from calamity several times, including a 1979 fire that destroyed their wooden screen. Today, the Sunset can accommodate up to 300 cars, and uses state-of-the-art digital FM broadcasting for sound. Admission is $8, and they’re a cash only establishment, so hit the ATM before you go. Byrd’s Adventure Center Ozark, Arkansas One of the crown jewels of Northwest Arkansas is the Mulberry River, and given that Byrd’s Adventure Center is situated on the Mulberry, that makes it a must-see for outdoor fun enthusiasts of all kinds, with attractions for off-roaders, hikers, dirt and mountain bikers, campers, canoeists or just those looking for a leisurely walk in the splendor of Northwest Arkansas. Byrd’s includes an on-site restaurant, and even a 2,500-foot airstrip for those who would rather fly in. For off-roaders, Byrd’s features over 30 miles of Jeep and ATV trails spread over 800 acres, with difficulty ranging from their easy trails, to their “Red Trails” which will throw everything but the kitchen sink at drivers, and which shouldn’t be attempted unless you’re in a high-horsepower, full-cage rig. Byrd’s is open year-round, and hosts huge events like the Ramsey Top Truck Champions Series, which draws several hundred 4x4s and spectators. Also found on site at Rock Creek Racing and Recreation is a motocross track, a dirt drag strip, public restrooms and campsites with water and electric hookups. (501)844-6008. www.rcrrorp.com Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch (SMORR) Seymour, Missouri Another excellent off-road paradise within easy driving distance of Northwest Arkansas, the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch a few miles south of Seymour, MO is another excellent way to burn a weekend and a tank of gas in the beauty of the Ozarks. Situated a few miles from the small town of Seymour, SMORR features over 940 acres of stunning countryside, with trails ranging from the easy level 1 to “hardcore” trails that will test the abilities of even purpose-built rock crawlers. SMORR hosts big events all year, including the annual “JeepStock” and the yearly “Top of the Ozarks” Jeep Jamboree in June. Rates are $25 per day for one vehicle and driver, with passengers over 13 years old admitted for an additional $10 per day. Tent camping is available on site for $15.
