Many believe it contains treasures dating back more than 400 years ago, with the search beginning in the late 1800s. The story says Spanish Conquistadors fled to the cave during a terrible winter storm to seek shelter. However, these people had recently raided Native American villages and the tribe members sought revenge. The Conquistadors blew their cover once they lit a fire inside the cavern, and smoke rose out of the top of the mountains. Once the dust settled, a conquistador sealed all the entrances to the cave and drew two maps, one on parchment paper and the other on limestone inside the cave. The cave’s current owner is still searching for this lost treasure and has evidence of what these ventures have found and can show you what the team is doing to find this treasure on this cave’s one-hour guided tour! War Eagle Cavern: Rogers, AR If you’re looking for caves near Rogers, Arkansas, this destination is a jackpot — in a boxed canyon on the edge of Beaver Lake lies War Eagle Cavern! Home to salamanders, bats, and other creatures, this cave educates and entertains while letting you explore its beauty. Tour guides can take you, your friends, and your family through this cave’s wide-open rooms along the internal stream and provide details about the formations you pass by on your journey. Check Out These Hidden Waterfalls in NWA Onyx Cave: Eureka Springs, AR Eureka Springs is an exciting town with music, history, and nature filling the entire city. The Onyx Cave is one popular location to visit if stalactites and stalagmites intrigue you! It was originally discovered in the 1800s and received its name from the numerous flowstone formations within its walls. This cave allows for a 30-minute self-guided audio tour and has an average temperature of 57 degrees to keep you cool during the warmer months. Cosmic Cavern: Berryville, AR Between Eureka Springs, AR and Branson, MO, rests Cosmic Cavern, Arkansas’ largest privately owned show cave! Staying a comfortable temp at 64 degrees year-round, Cosmic Cavern takes about 1 hour and 15 min to walk through. Two cave lakes are visible as you explore, with one home to a handful of trout! Group tours are available for gatherings of 10 or more, and Wild Cave Tours are available after the regular hours that let you explore the cave’s unfathomable depths! Blanchard Springs Cavern: Fifty-Six, AR Outside Mountain View, AR, lies Blanchard Springs Cavern! This three-level “living” cave system features formations that are still changing. Water droplets full of minerals deposit to create and alter the crystalline formations found throughout this underground wonder. You can see these crystalline formations on tours guided by Forest Service interpreters. This is also the season of ghost stories, tales of otherworldly happenings, and reminders of the places we usually keep away from — like old cemeteries. A cemetery is a place of peace and rest, but there are a few in Arkansas that have “a life” of their own. Here is a small list of haunted cemeteries in Arkansas. CHINA GROVE CEMETERY SALINE COUNTY, ARKANSAS Even though it has been closed for decades, China Grove Cemetery is still visited by ghost hunters. The old cemetery is located on a narrow abandoned dirt road, gated off, just off of South Alexander Road in Saline County. The last burial there was in the early 1970’s. China Grove Cemetery is not like the traditional large graveyard, but splintered up into pieces here and there in the wooded area. China Grove has had a reputation for decades as being a hot spot for paranormal activity and dark local legends. Some witnesses say that as you approach the old metal gate at the end of the dirt road leading to the cemetery, your vehicle headlights will start to flicker, and the car radio will go silent or only pick up static. For years, there had been sightings of a white dog with cold blue eyes at the gate, with the dog appearing transparent when the beam of a flashlight hits it. Another legend about the abandoned cemetery is that the headstones dotting the dark woods sometimes glow, with the glow moving along behind you as you travel to get to the cemetery. There is also the distraught phantom woman carrying a crying baby. Some say she will approach, trying to give you her baby. Purportedly, if you take her offering, the bundle is not a baby but a gravestone that automatically weighs you down to the ground, and you cannot get out from under it. Are You Brave Enough to Explore These NWA Caves? FORT SMITH NATIONAL CEMETERY FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS After the fall of Fort Smith to Union forces during the Civil War, the old post burial spot was elevated to the status of national cemetery in 1867. The Fort Smith National Cemetery is a peaceful and dignified place of final rest… for most. Some have reported sightings of a ghostly funeral procession, the participants decked out in turn-of-the-century clothing. Throughout the years, Visitors to the cemetery have heard disembodied-voices singing old hymnals like a choir. Others say the ghost of a caparisoned horse will appear, slowly being lead by a phantom Civil War soldier towards the back of the cemetery. At night, there have been sightings of bright orbs changing color at a rapid rate, which then just disappear, and on some evenings, the sound of wagons resonates throughout the cemetery. LIBERTY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS Liberty Baptist Church is a sleepy country church located just outside the city of Batesville. Families in the area have been members of this church for years, and it has been an integral part of the community for decades. Yet many say it is the most haunted area in Independence County, Arkansas. In the older part of the church itself, witnesses have reported seeing an elderly woman in the windows, either gazing out through the glass or rocking in a rocking chair mid-air.  The dirt road entrance into the cemetery is purportedly haunted by the ghost of a young woman who was murdered in the early 1900’s, put to rest in the cemetery a century ago, but still pacing up and down the dirt road looking for her kin to visit. Throughout the years, visitors, ghosthunters, and the curious have captured the ghostly image of a young boy in their photos, and the disembodied sounds of a child’s laughter can be heard throughout the cemetery during the fall months. Summer’s here, and it’s a great time to get out there and see the beauty, peace and splendor of Northwest Arkansas. For our money, there is no better way to do that than by packing up your tent, camp chairs, ice chest and marshmallow-toasting sticks and finding your way to one of the many, many great places to camp in the Ozarks and Boston Mountains. There’s too many great camping spots in our area to list in full here, of course, but we thought we’d share a few of our favorite places to camp in Northwest Arkansas. So… what are you waiting for? AR Hwy. 74 West Fork, AR Established during the Great Depression by FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps, Devil’s Den State Park still includes many CCC-built structures, including the stone dam that impounded Lee Creek to create the lovely Lake Devil. In addition to hiking, backpacking and mountain bike trails along with canoe and paddle boat rentals, the park features seventeen romantic and fully equipped cabins, all with wood-burning fireplaces, if you want to go “glamping.” If you have a slightly more rustic experience in mind, Devil’s Den also features 143 campsites for tents, including 44 class AAA sites with water, electrical and sewer, 24 class D campsites, and eight that are “hike in” only, meaning you’ve got to work to get to them. There are showers, garbage pickup, and plentiful opportunities for adventure or peaceful reflection. Feel free to bring your horse, too. There’s 20 miles of riding trails at Devil’s Den. Camping rates range from $13 to $34 per night, depending on amenities. Photo Credit: ArkansasStateParks.com Withrow Springs State Park 33424 Spur 23, Huntsville, AR The Arkansas State Park system is full of undiscovered, off-the-beaten-path gems with all the beauty of the parks that get all the headlines, but a fraction of the visitors. One of those is Withrow Springs State Park near Huntsville. Secluded deep in a valley hemmed by limestone bluffs along War Eagle Creek, the petite park is a favorite spot for camping, with opportunities for fishing for a number of sport fish species, canoe rentals, and hiking on War Eagle Trail, Dogwood Natural Trail, or Forest Trail. In addition to a swimming pool, tennis courts, pavilions and baseball and softball fields, Withrow Springs State Park includes 30 Class AAA campsites with power, water and sewer hookups, allowing the sites to accept either tent or RV campers. Nightly camping fees are $34. The park is located five miles north of Huntsville near Arkansas Highway 23. Cool Caves to Explore in Northwest Arkansas Photo Credit: ArkansasStateParks.com Lake Fort Smith State Park 18160 Shepherd Spring Road, Mountainburg Another under-appreciated gem of the Arkansas State Parks system, Lake Fort Smith State Park near Mountainburg is a beautiful site set in the Boston Mountains, on one edge of the 1,400-acre Lake Fort Smith. No matter what you’re hoping to get up to (other than swimming; Lake Ft. Smith is a drinking water reservoir, so swimming, tubing, jet skiing, skiing and other similar activities aren’t allowed), there’s something for you at Lake Fort Smith State Park, including a huge swimming pool, hiking, backpacking along the Ozark Highland National Recreation Trail, ten picturesque cabins, an 8,000 square foot visitor’s center with exhibits on local history and geology, a theater, and year-round interpretive programs. We’re here to talk about camping, though, and Lake Fort Smith features plenty of that: 30 capsites — 20 AAA with water, sewer and electrical hookups, and 10 Class B with only water and electrical — with nearby showers, dump stations, and restroom facilities. Nightly rates for tent or RV camping range from $22 to $34 per night. How EVs Are Impacting Nature and the Environment Time is finite, and you’re never going to get back today’s sunset!
